I am a maker with an education in graphic design and passions that lie beyond the digital realm of art making. Well into pursuing my design degree I realized that creatively, I am most satisfied when producing tangible work. I fell in love with the relationship between organic and geometric forms, both occurring in nature and by sleight of hand. I began exploring this relationship through the mediums of paint and ink, often incorporating design elements like typography and bold line-work resembling text. Through doing this I discovered that typography combines organic and geometric shapes, and that letterforms are dependent upon this relationship. Text, brush strokes, letterforms, paint drips—even inconsistencies in the fluidity of ink rolling across a ballpoint as it moves from pen to paper—all have this in common, bridging the gap between design and paint and creating a union between my head (design) and my heart (paint and ink) that satisfies me as a maker. Most of what you see here is the latter. ♡
My inspiration is largely derived from nature, especially the Appalachian foothills, hollers, and knobs that raised me, and the people who inhabit them. Much of my work is related to the aforementioned relationship between organic and geometric shapes, but also to the relationship between the natural state of things and the way the human hand can alter that state. Consequently, I enjoy the process of almost forcing shapes to harmonize—shapes that typically don’t exist together in nature.
If I'm not making or working, I'm probably deep in the woods with my daughter, who is undoubtedly my best work yet...
